The evidence is there for all to see. What more does Clinton need?”

Conn Halinan’s counterpunch article in 2004 aptly highlights an important fact when it comes to the Haliburtons, Perles and Wumsers and their Project for the New American Century (PNAC) as it relates to Central Asia:

The Commodity Futures Modernization Act was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bill Clinton in December 2000. It was an attempt to solve a dispute between the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) that arose in the early 1980s. At that time, Congress had enacted legislation to expand the scope of what was defined as a commodity. This resulted in some overlap between the regulatory scope of the SEC and the CFTC.

Author/Sponsor-Mark Brickell, he was one of the central characters in ISDA, the International Swaps and Derivatives Association. He was a vehement opponent of Jim Leitch, who was one of the leaders in favor of regulating derivatives. Mark also engineered a very interesting lobbying campaign targeting the media, in particular the Wall Street Journal, and ISDA, this trade group, insisted that the Wall Street Journal not even use the word derivatives. And I found this correspondence in which the Wall Street Journal was praised over a period of time when it gave up on the word derivatives because it sounds so inflammatory - it sounded inflammatory at the time – and they started calling them things like securities instead of derivatives, and - and that won the praise from ISDA and Mark Brickell.

I understand (R)Phil Gramm & (R)Dick Luger sponsored bill. Interestingly Phil Gramm's wife Wendy sat on Enron's board (also held job in DC, I think the FTC). So the Republicans aren't innocent bystanders in this financial debacle. Dick Lugar is still in the Senate - I'm amazed that he can look American's in the eye when he is responsible for writing this devastating legislation.

Bill Clinton realized a decade or so too late that he messed up by prioritizing Arkansas rice farmers over Haitians. In a stunning and wonderful apology, Clinton said:

It may have been good for some of my farmers in Arkansas, but it has not worked. It was a mistake... I had to live everyday with the consequences of the loss of capacity to produce a rice crop in Haiti to feed those people because of what I did; nobody else.

Wow. Just so you can connect all of the dots here, recall that Clinton is from Arkansas and Arkansas is the top rice producing state in the U.S. During his time in office, Clinton imposed neoliberal economic reforms on Haiti, flooding their markets with cheap U.S. rice. This put Haitian farmers out of business, sending many of them to Port-au-Prince. In a stroke of irony, many out of work farmers were starving... not because there was no food but because they could not afford it. I'll be honest that I'm thrilled Clinton's now come face to face with Haiti's crushing poverty in a big way, because he seems to truly understand what he did as President and why it was not good. Let's hope he also understands that this is not a phenomenon limited to Haiti:

"A combination of food aid, but also cheap imports have ... resulted in a lack of investment in Haitian farming, and that has to be reversed," U.N. humanitarian chief John Holmes told The Associated Press. "That's a global phenomenon, but Haiti's a prime example. I think this is where we should start."

So now that Clinton gets it, let's hope he shares his newfound wisdom with his wife... and her boss. The bipartisan Clinton-Bush team is now promising that the U.S. will help create Haitian jobs. I sincerely hope that their plan is not to increase imports of Haitian goods to the U.S. so that they can create more jobs in sweatshops, but I fear that might be the case.

Alterman argued that now that President Clinton had sacrificed the left's position on welfare and crime -- defensible positions indeed, Alterman asserted, but hard to defend in a soundbite culture -- he had more running room for his "progressive" agenda. Furthermore, Alterman went on, it was Clinton's "progressive" proposals that had frightened Republicans and Kenneth Starr, causing them to resort to scandal-mongering extremes to stop him. In polite and swift fashion, Hitchens chopped Alterman's argument into chum. No, he replied, "What [Clinton] gave away was not his to give." The crowd signaled its approval, though many did squirm when Hitchens in his tongue- in- and- out- of- cheek fashion called for more hatred, contempt and partisanship in politics: "Politics is division by definition."

Alterman compounded his misstep when he came to Clinton's defense after Hitchens claimed the President had retained consultant/pollster Dick Morris "because of" a racist ad Morris had created for Sen. Jesse Helms. How do you know, Alterman asked, that was why Morris had been hired by Clinton? Alterman may have had a point, but Hitchens didn't have to respond, for he had positioned Alterman into sounding as if he were either a) defending or b) excusing Clinton's relationship with Morris. That did not fly on this boat.

He noted that there could be five or six Chernobyls and that the United States, which spends billions of dollars preparing to fight a nuclear war, needs to spend a few billion to prevent nuclear catastrophe. That makes sense, but currently Washington devotes a measly couple hundred million to the cause.

CLINTON IRAN AND LATIN AMERICA

Clinton said the United States was well aware Iran had stepped up its diplomatic activities in the region, citing Venezuela and Bolivia in particular.

"We can only say that is a really bad idea for the countries involved," Clinton told a State Department briefing on Latin American relations.

"This is the major supporter, promoter and exporter of terrorism in the world today," she said. "If people want to flirt with Iran, they should take a look at what the consequences might well be for them. And we hope that they will think twice."

Clinton said Washington would continue to express concerns about Venezuela - where Chavez won a referendum in February that allows him to keep running for re-election - and about Nicaragua, where the Supreme Court in October opened the way for leftist President Daniel Ortega to seek a new term in a 2011 election.

"We all hope in the not too distant future to be able to see a democratic Cuba...something that would be extraordinarily positive for our hemisphere,"

Added Clinton: "I do not believe we have locked ourselves into leaving. But what we have done ... is to signal very clearly to all audiences that the United States is not interested in occupying Afghanistan."

As part of a full-court press by the White House to make the case for Obama's new strategy, Gates, Clinton and Mullen argued for the troop increase. But they also were careful with their words so as not to aggravate divisions on the issue.

Clinton and Gates cast the war as serious but not hopeless. Mullen said the Taliban had regained ground in Afghanistan - gaining "dominant influence" in 11 of 34 provinces - but could be defeated with enough resources and time.

AL JAZEERA ON HONDURAS

The United States has decided to endorse the result of the upcoming election in Honduras, with or without Manuel Zelaya, the ousted president, in the next government.

Ian Kelly, a State Department spokesman, said the poll on Sunday is a "critical step" towards restoring democracy in the country.

"The holding of a free, fair and transparent election is necessary but not sufficient for Honduras to re-establish the democratic and constitutional order," he said in a statement on Friday.

Kelly said Washington, which originally condemned the June ouster of Zelaya, would continue to push for implementation of a US-brokered deal to create a unity government and let the Congress decide on whether to reinstate Zelaya until the next president takes office in January.

The foreign policy adviser of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Brazil's president, has said that the US risked souring relations with most of Latin America if it recognised the Honduras election.

HONDURAS COUP ELECTION

The coup and its leaders, as well as their fake elections, are the target of international condemnation. So why is the Obama Administration — after making a strong stand against the coup early on — letting the coup leaders get away with all of this? On the one hand, there’s the Lanny Davis Effect: The good friend of current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is also a paid lobbyist for the golpistas. On the other hand, there’s the Jim DeMint Effect: The far-right knuckledragging Senator from South Carolina, who of course just loves the bloody-handed golpistas, has been holding key Obama Administration nominations hostage as a means to keep the White House from intervening effectively against the coup.

NEOLIBERLISM IN RUSSIA

In Russia, the catastrophe of shock therapy was unleashed on 2nd January 1992. The shock came in two ways – first, the price explosion (food suddenly cost four times what it used to), and second, the massive public expenditure cut-backs. Inflation did drop – from almost 250% in January 1992 to approximately 30% in December 1992. Progress indeed. By 1995, it was estimated that 80% of Russians had suffered a serious decline in their income. Income from work for families had dropped from being about half of all income at the start of the 1990s to just 39% in 2000. From a mortality rate of 11 per thousand in 1990, the death rate soared to 15 per thousand in 2000, peaking in 1994 at almost 16 per thousand. In fact, in this “unprecedented peace time mortality”, we find an alarming underlying truth about Russian society. Between 1990 and 1999, there were 3,353,000 excess deaths in the whole Russian territory. Male life expectancy fell from 63.5 years in 1991 to 57.6 years in 1994. Female life expectancy fell from 74.3 years in 1991 to 71.2 years in 1994.
