“Conspiracy theory” is a term that at once strikes fear and anxiety in the hearts of most every public figure, particularly journalists and academics. Since the 1960s the label has become a disciplinary device that has been overwhelmingly effective in defining certain events off limits to inquiry or debate. Especially in the United States raising legitimate questions about dubious official narratives destined to inform public opinion (and thereby public policy) is a major thought crime that must be cauterized from the public psyche at all costs.

Conspiracy theory is a term that originally was a neutral descriptor for any claim of civil, criminal or political conspiracy. However, it has come almost exclusively to refer to any fringe theory which explains a historical or current event as the result of a secret plot by conspirators of almost superhuman power and cunning. GLENN GREENWALD EXPOSES CASS SUNSTEIN

Who is it who relentlessly spread "false conspiracy theories" of Saddam-engineered anthrax attacks and Iraq-created mushroom clouds and a Ba'athist/Al-Qaeda alliance -- the most destructive conspiracy theories of the last generation? And who is it who demonized as "conspiracy-mongers" people who warned that the U.S. Government was illegally spying on its citizens, systematically torturing people, attempting to establish permanent bases in the Middle East, or engineering massive bailout plans to transfer extreme wealth to the industries which own the Government? The most chronic and dangerous purveyors of "conspiracy theory" games are the very people Sunstein thinks should be empowered to control our political debates through deceit and government resources: namely, the Government itself

It is this history of government deceit and wrongdoing that renders Sunstein's desire to use covert propaganda to "undermine" anti-government speech so repugnant. The reason conspiracy theories resonate so much is precisely that people have learned -- rationally -- to distrust government actions and statements. Sunstein's proposed covert propaganda scheme is a perfect illustration of why that is. In other words, people don't trust the Government and "conspiracy theories" are so pervasive precisely because government is typically filled with people like Cass Sunstein, who think that systematic deceit and government-sponsored manipulation are justified by their own Goodness and Superior Wisdom.

UPDATE III: Just to get a sense for what an extremist Cass Sunstein is (which itself is ironic, given that his paper calls for "cognitive infiltration of extremist groups," as the Abstract puts it), marvel at this paragraph:

So Sunstein isn't calling right now for proposals (1) and (2) -- having Government "ban conspiracy theorizing" or "impose some kind of tax on those who" do it -- but he says "each will have a place under imaginable conditions." I'd love to know the "conditions" under which the government-enforced banning of conspiracy theories or the imposition of taxes on those who advocate them will "have a place." That would require, at a bare minumum, a repeal of the First Amendment. Anyone who believes this should, for that reason alone, be barred from any meaningful government position.

CASS SUNSTEIN AGAIN

Cass Sunstein wrote (at page 22 of his paper, "Conspiracy Theories" - download here as a pdf - written with Adrian Vermeule concerning various dirty tricks tactics for government to undermine conspiracy theories):

"Government agents (and their allies) might enter chat rooms, online social networks, or even real-space groups and attempt to undermine percolating conspiracy theories by raising doubts about their factual premises, causal logic or implications for political action."

Sunstein, is the Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Obama administration. He thus can advise the White House on how to deal with those pesky conspiracy theories. Given that the Obama White House is much harder on leakers than even the Bush White House, it is obvious that truth is in the cross hairs.

So the problem for government has become
1) Leakers
2) Conspiracy Theories.

THE FALLACY OF INSUFFICIENT CYNICISM

The Fallacy of Insufficient Cynicism

In a recently exchange with someone who vehemently disagreed with me, the person said, “It’s just baffling to me how anyone could misconstrue something like this.” Well, it is equally baffling to me how some people can still fail to suspect our government’s motives. Let us borrow this phrase to describe it: The Fallacy of Insufficient Cynicism.

Just in today’s news over at Global Research, you can read two pieces from established scholars that should bring a shadow across even the most trusting brow. My challenge to anyone who persists in believing that our government will not do horrible things to us, the American people, is this: show me what would prevent them? If it’s true that we have been operating under a Continuity of Government (COG) plan since 9/11, then our Constitution has been effectively suspended. Who is then capable of stopping NSPD 51 and the latest, NSPD 59? And even if that isn’t true, what has stopped them from doing anything we don’t like?

The national security crowd considers themselves sophisticated and tough, and they remind us that our government has to do certain dirty things to keep us safe. It’s the ‘real world’, the world Jack Nicholson screamed about when he said, “You can’t handle the truth!!” Some of those things are described here.

But in the next breath they insist that the government would never do anything to hurt us. This is where the Fallacy of Insufficient Cynicism kicks in. They admit conspiracies happen and are necessary, but they accuse the conspiracy theorists of being naive for thinking that some of the conspiracies are directed against the American people.

Now a quick observation on the state of the American people should confirm who is truly being naive here. Have our wages increased? No. Has our security increased? No. Do we enjoy greater leisure time and a safe food supply and better jobs? No. No. No. Is it all a coincidence or else the fault of brown people and/or liberals and/or terrorists? No. Those are the scapegoats. The people responsible for these giant problems are the people actually running the government. If things suck on a grand scale, and they do, it’s Washington’s fault. Remember all that talk about the ownership society we heard from the right? How about some ownership that the Bush Regime and it’s congressional enablers and Israeli handlers have run the USA into the ground?

Here is George Bush’s latest disgusting terrorist attack on the American people: NSPD 59. There is nothing here to prevent the executive branch from classifying Americans critical of the government as threats to national security. It is just another nail in the coffin of our Bill of Rights. And if Bush/Cheney/Israel decide to rustle up some new war with Iran, you can be sure that we will find out why Bush passed NSPD 51 and NSPD 59 — so they can come out of the authoritarian closet once and for all.

Our government clearly holds us in utter contempt. It is ultimately naive to refuse to recognize this.

COVERUP AS CONSPIRACY THEORY

Millions of words have been expended down the decades on the matter of the press’s role in “cover-ups.” Every cover-up has its own specific mix
as with the saga of the USS Liberty, the Agency’s role in the 1953 Guatemalan coup, the story that prompted the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and New York Times to launch a collective onslaught on the San Jose Mercury News for Gary Webb’s “Dark Alliance” series in 1996.

The consistent features, starting with the extreme unease with which the corporate press approaches a story.

The onslaught on the Isolationists who strove to keep America clear of both World Wars. The clearest illustration of this antipathy is the mountain of evidence attesting to FDR’s campaign to get America into the war.

Professor Thomas Mahl published covert British campaign in the 1998 book Desperate Deception -- British Covert Operations in the United States, 1939-44 writes, “until recently, the study lacked respectability
smacks too much of conspiracy – a word with a very unprofessional ring among American historians…

Graduate students are warned about the ‘furtive fallacy.’… How does the historian avoid the charge that he is indulging in conspiracy history when he explores the activities of a thousand people.

The ruthless campaign to discredit Charles Beard’s pioneering 1948 book, President Roosevelt and the Coming of the War 1941 attested to the determination by the foreign policy and academic establishments to crush the Non-Interventionists and neutralize them as a political force.

Denouncing “conspiracy mongering” was an integral part of this campaign – never more vehement than when addressing the whole issue of FDR’s conduct in the run-up to Pearl Harbor.

Sometimes a conspiracy does surface, propelled into the light of day by a tenacious journalist. But by then the caravan has moved on.

CONSPIRACY REDUX AND DONE

Conpiracy Redux and Done.

The social and political systems of this world are complicated. It is not complicated because that is the nature of it, or because it is just naturally so. It is complicated because there are people and organizations who have spent hundreds of billions of dollars to make it complicated.

There are massive disinformation wars waged across this globe everyday. There are hundreds of people who make a career out of raising the "noise to signal ratio" to such a level that the signal disappears almost completely and if you could find it, you would need a code breaker to read it.

There are people who make a career out of writing alternative narratives. The US media, the world media is a CIA disinformation op. There are CIA assets at every nexus. The US intelligence agencies spend hundreds of billions of dollars every year hiding the truth and the intellegence agencies of Russia, China, Iran, etc., spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year trying to find the truth that the US has hidden, and vice versa.

What is the truth? Who knows? If you should ever find the complete truth, it would take several months to digest it and to recover from the shock of it. The truth we so blithely spoout is just someones narrative and for every narrative there are many equally plausible alternative narrative.

The notion that the narrative that you pick up on NBC, CBS, FOX, Washington Post, LA Times, or the POTUS press office, is the true narrative is ludicrous. And the notion that the possibility of the truth of an alternative narrative is simply

A conspiracy theory is a hypothesis. There are facts, generally disassociated. One needs a hypothesis to access and organize those facts into coherency. When someone want to discredit your hypotheses, they call it a conspiracy theory. A conspiracy theory is a hypothesis.

IS NOAM CHOMSKY AN INTELLIGENCE ASSET

For example, a significant part of the domestic left and an even greater part of the international left think that Noam Chomsky is a Mossad or a CIA asset. This is because there are, in fact, many contradictions in Noam Chomsky's positions. Jeffrey Blankfort is perhaps the best of the domestic Chomsky contradiction reporters which provides the fodder for the "conspiracy mongers"

Here is the very latest "conspiracy theory", so it is hot off the press. Read this and tell me, is Chomsky a Mossad/CIA asset or no.

It starts with Ali Abunimah.

Abunimah is not well known in the US (except the campuses), certainly not in the US corporate controlled media apparatus, but he is a major and well known figure internationally. He is the founder of Electronic Intifada. Now, Ali Abunimah is the real deal. He is well respected. He is one of three young, media savvy, successful Palestinian activists see here, here, here. He cannot be, nor is he, dismissed out of hand.



In Ali Abunimah's latest blog post, he says,

I have a great deal of admiration and respect for Noam Chomsky, one of the foremost intellectuals of our time, whose work opened my eyes on a great many issues. But like many others, I have been increasingly baffled by the many inconsistencies in his views on Palestine...

"In his 17 May interview on Democracy Now he told Amy Goodman that his planned itinerary included a meeting with Salam Fayyad, the unelected US- and Israeli-backed "prime minister" of the Ramallah Palestinian Authority imposed after the US helped overthrow the Hamas-led 'national unity government' that came after the 2006 election. Chomsky told Goodman:

I was going to meet with the Prime Minister [Fayyad]. Unfortunately, I couldnt. But his office called me here in Amman this morning, and we had a long discussion.

He is pursuing policies, which, in my view, are quite sensible, policies of essentially developing facts on the ground. Its almost - I think its probably a conscious imitation of the early Zionist policies, establishing facts on the ground and hoping that the political forms that follow will be determined by them. And the policies sound to me like sensible and sound ones. The question, of course, is whether - the extent to which Israel and the United States, which is a determining factor - the extent to which they'll permit them to be implemented. But if implemented, and if, of course, Israel and the United States would terminate their systematic effort to separate Gaza from the West Bank, which is quite illegal, if that continues, yes, it could turn into a viable Palestinian state.

Really? Chomsky the great critic of US efforts to undermine democracy and impose its clients around the world is now effusively endorsing what is in effect a US-backed puppet regime?"...

Now for the conspiracy theory. Is the corporate controlled media in the US crafting Salam Fayyad as the new 'reasonable guy', the 'guy we can talk to', years of collaboration having worn out the old 'reasonable guy', Mahmoud Abbas.

Is Noam's endorsement of the new collaborator exactly what we'd expect from a Mossad/CIA asset who is working for those looking for the new guy to sell out the Palestinians. Was the action of Noam Chomsky being turned away at the Allenby Bridge in Amman, Jordan simply a CIA/Mossad operation? Another term used is left wing gatekeeper, and here, and here.

Hmm. I don't know. It's all quite plausible. Seriously, it is.

Maybe, instead, Noam Chomsky is Moses at the Jordan River (see the symmetry? Allenby Bridge, etc., quite clever, if I do say so myself).

Maybe Noam is saying:

Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

Maybe that's the conspiracy.

STATE CRIMES AGAINST DEMOCRACY

New research in the journal American Behavioral Scientist (Sage publications, February 2010) addresses the concept of “State Crimes Against Democracy” (SCAD). Professor Lance deHaven-Smith from Florida State University writes that SCADs involve highlevel government officials, often in combination with private interests, that engage in covert activities for political advantages and power. Proven SCADs since World War II include

• Pearl Harbor, Robert B Stinnett/McCollum Memo

• McCarthyism (fabrication of evidence of a communist infiltration),

• Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (President Johnson and Robert McNamara falsely claimed North Vietnam attacked a US ship),

• burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist in effort to discredit Ellsberg, the Watergate break-in,

• Iran-Contra,

• Florida’s 2000 Election (felon disenfranchisement program), and

• fixed intelligence on WMDs to justify the Iraq War.1

Other suspected SCADs include the

• assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald,

• the shooting of George Wallace,

• the October Surprise near the end of the Carter presidency,

• military grade anthrax mailed to Senators Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy,
  
• Martin Luther King’s assassination, and the
• collapse of World Trade Center Building 7 on September 11, 2001.
  

The proven SCADs have a long trail of congressional hearings, public records, and academic research establishing the truth of the activities. The suspected SCADs listed above have substantial evidence of covert actions with countervailing deniability that tend to leave the facts in dispute.2

The term “conspiracy theory” is often used to denigrate and discredit inquiry into the veracity of suspected SCADs. Labeling SCAD research as “conspiracy theory” is an effective method of preventing ongoing investigations from being reported in the corporate media and keep them outside of broader public scrutiny. Psychologist Laurie Manwell, University of Guelph, addresses the psychological advantage that SCAD actors hold in the public sphere. Manwell, writing in American Behavioral Scientist (Sage 2010) states, “research shows that people are far less willing to examine information that disputes, rather than confirms, their beliefs . . . pre-existing beliefs can interfere with
SCADs inquiry, especially in regards to September 11, 2001.”3

“In 1977 the family of Martin Luther King engaged an attorney and friend, Dr. William Pepper, to investigate a suspicion they had. They no longer believed that James Earl Ray was the killer. For their peace of mind, for an accurate record of history, and out of a sense of justice they conducted a two decade long investigation. The evidence they uncovered was put before a jury in Memphis, TN, in November 1999. 70 witnesses testified under oath, 4,000 pages of transcripts described that evidence, much of it new. Proven SCADs since World War II include

• McCarthyism (fabrication of evidence of a communist infiltration),

• Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (President Johnson and Robert McNamara falsely claimed North Vietnam attacked a US ship),

• burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist in effort to discredit Ellsberg, the Watergate break-in,
