The goal of this book was to bring up all the doctrines and arguments of Gnosticism, and then bring counter arguments (of orthodox Christianity) to crush them.
Therefore, with this book, you can listen and learn all the details of Gnosticism and ignore the part (the part where Irenaeus is inserting his opinions) why orthodox Christianity is superior than Gnosticism, etc.

At about the time of Kent State and democratic convention '68, there began ruthless repression of the New Left. In the face of this the Left began to fall apart. "The Man" was much bigger and stronger than we realized. At that point, a change in tactics began. If it was impossible to get the policeman out of ones head by overthrowing the state, then instead one should find a way to get inside of one's own mind and removing the controls implanted there by the state and the corporations. Out of this would come a new self and thus a new society. The personal became political. (This seems somewhat Gramsciian). They outgun us. Turn to Willhelm Reich (The nemesis of Freaud, whose ideas were used by the state for social control). Invent ways for individuals to free themselves. The Esalen Institute. A form of group encounter put on by a man trained by Reich, Fritz Perls. Self enactment, self revelations, staying present.

Another driver was Herbert Marcuse, One Dimensional Man. Marcuse's most famous student was Angela Davis

Modern psychology has a word that is probably used more than any other word in psychology. It is the word "maladjusted." This is the ringing pride to modern child psychology. Maladjusted. Now of course, we all want to live the well adjusted life. In order to neurotic and schizophrenic personalities.

But as I move to my conclusion, I would like to say to you today in a very honest manner, there are some things in our society and some things in our world which I am proud to be maladjusted and I call upon all men of good-will will be maladjusted to these things until the good societies realize.

I very honestly say to you that I never intend to adjust myself to racial segregation and discrimination.

I never intend to adjust myself to religious bigotry.

I never intend to adjust myself to economic conditions that will take necessities from the many to give luxuries to the few. and leave millions of god's children smothering in an air tight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society.

I never intend to adjust myself to the madness of militarism, to self-defeating effects of physical violence.

But in a day when sputniks and explorers are dashing through outer space and guided ballistic missiles are carving highways of death through the stratosphere, no nation can win a war.

It is no longer the choice between violence and nonviolence. It is either nonviolence or nonexistence.

Henry Kravis, founding partner in the private equity company KKR, made $450 million last year--that's $1.3 million per day, or $51,369 per hour. He did it largely by borrowing money to take over public companies, then selling off the company's assets to pay the debt, laying off thousands of workers, and slashing benefits for those who remained.

private equity is described as a firm that takes over “public companies using primarily borrowed money.”

“To pay off this debt,” the film says, “they then sell off assets of the companies, fire thousands of workers and radically cut benefits of the remaining employees. It is the same product, in the same building, with the same customers as before.”

At another point in the movie, one of the kidnappers asks his victim, “When half the city is knee-deep in shit and you’re rolling in an expensive car, you expect them not to hate you? Why shouldn’t they hate you?”


Secuestro Express introduces its subject from a nervous distance. The film opens with ominous music and sweeping, aerial shots of the city’s expansive slums. Tin-roofed shanties crammed onto the hills ringing the prosperous center city tumble over one another chaotically, but also seem massed, as if waiting for a signal to swallow up the high-rises and condos below. They are an explosion, a violence, waiting to happen.

Entreaties to “build the middle-class” and “extend a hand to whoever works for you” are of course meaningless, feel-good platitudes offered as alternatives to empowering the impoverished. It’s a politics based, like Secuestro Express is, on a fear of the poor. You almost have to feel sorry for Jakubowicz and company. They realize both the immorality and the danger of Venezuela’s class divide, but they are too timid to support those working to remedy it. They’re left, then, with their impossible dream: that through the extended hands of the rich, Niga, Budú, and the slums of Caracas will disappear—poof!—and Trece will be declared chairman of the Revolutionary Republic of Middle-Class Venezuela.
