So the Democrats are trying to outflank the Bushies by attacking their pet Iraqi, prime minister Maliki, who has apparently been so tactless as to suggest that maybe the Israelis shouldn't be bombing Lebanon into the Stone Age.

Twenty-odd Congressional Democrats, led by the sometime Israeli auxiliary soldier Rep. Rahm Emanuel, have written a frothing letter to Denny Hastert. Some excerpts:

In the wake of comments made by Mr. Maliki and other members of the Iraqi leadership denouncing Israel, it is clear that their foreign policy goals are at odds with those of the United States. The Speaker's podium reflects our nation's values. We the Members of the House, under your leadership, decide who receives that honor, and the list should not include anyone whose interests conflict with the United States.

Note the taken-for-granted identification of Israel's megalomaniac ambitions with American interests.

It's hard to find words to describe the comical craziness of all this. I guess the 2006 election is going to be all about who's a bigger toady to Israel.

The real irony in the global political defecation business that Bush should ponder is that American planes, bombs and tanks were directly (in Iraq) or indirectly (through Israel in Lebanon) responsible for bringing Iraq and Lebanon to their current state of turmoil, destruction and pain.

The real irony in Bush's statement is that he wants others to pressure Syria to pressure Hizbullah to change its policies - at a moment when the central pillar of Washington's Middle East policies appears to be a refusal to speak to some of the most important political groups in the region. The US has no relations or known contacts with Iran, Hamas and Hizbullah, and is not on speaking terms with Syria, which it has mildly sanctioned.

Another irony is that Bush fails to grasp that Hizbullah's rise to prominence in the past quarter century in many ways represents a reaction to the three principal causes of mass dissatisfaction, anger, fear and humiliation among Arab populations: ineffective and autocratic Arab governments, an aggressive and predatory Israel, and a US that supports both of these tormentors of ordinary Arabs. If these underlying problems are not addressed and resolved, groups like Hizbullah will continue to emerge organically from the Middle Eastern soil, regardless of what happens to Hizbullah in the coming weeks.

Pentagon OKs Possible $210 Million Jet Fuel Sale To Israel

The Pentagon on Friday said it has approved a possible $210 million sale to Israel of JP-8 jet fuel.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the deal. Congress has the ability to block foreign military transactions but rarely steps in.

The Pentagon said it had not yet identified a contractor for the fuel. A competitive process is expected.

"This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country which has been, and continues to be, an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East," the defense agency said.

"The jet fuel will be consumed while the aircraft is in use to keep peace and security in the region," the agency said.

THE CRIME OF THE NUREMBERG TRIALS WAS AGGRESSIVE WAR

While many Americans think of the Nuremberg trials after World War II as just holding Nazi leaders accountable for genocide, a major charge against Adolf Hitler’s henchmen was the crime of aggressive war. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, who represented the United States at the Nuremberg Tribunal, made clear that the intent was to establish a precedent against aggressive war.

“Our position is that whatever grievances a nation may have, however objectionable it finds the status quo, aggressive warfare is an illegal means for settling those grievances or for altering those conditions,” Jackson said, adding that the same rules would apply to the victors in World War II.

“Let me make clear that while this law is first applied against German aggressors, the law includes, and if it is to serve a useful purpose, it must condemn aggression by any other nations, including those which sit here now in judgment,” Jackson said.

Most people get their news from the mainstream media. These are the newspapers, radio networks, and television networks owned by large corporations. In the last few decades, the concentration of media has increased dramatically, so that programming is produced in a large center, such as New York, and is then fed out to the member stations. A certain amount of local news is still collected locally. However, national and international issues come from one source.

While there may be slight differences in the way the major media cover stories, by and large they are promoting the point of view of those who own them. These are wealthy people with connections with other wealthy people who own the large corporations that dominate the modern economic landscape. They are also tightly connected with the two major political parties in the US. In fact, they represent a very small stratum of the public: those who have stakes of ownership.

The news they report is coloured by their interests, and their interests are not the interests of the vast majority of their readers. And one of their principle interests is to keep the majority of their readers or viewers in ignorance over the true facts of US policy and the consequences of this policy on people overseas. There is minimal news reporting that deals with international affairs, and that reporting which is done is heavily biased from a simplistic "us and them" perspective. "Us" being the US and its allies, although the allies don't really count for much, and "them" is everyone else. "Them" used to be portrayed as in the sphere of influence of the Russians. Nowadays the French seem to be portrayed as the Bad Guys. Along, of course, with the entire Arab and Moslem world.

The mainstream news sites accept as a given the proclamations that come from the White House. In the period prior to the invasion of Iraq, the assertion's of the Bush Administration that Saddam was an immediate threat to the US, that he had stockpiled WMD that could be unleashed upon the US, was accepted without question by the mainstream news.

CONSEQUENCES OF IRAQI RAPE IN AN ELECTION YEAR

21-year-old former Army private has been charged with killing four members of an Iraqi family and raping one of the victims before shooting her, federal prosecutors and the Army said Monday.

Steven D. Green, a former member of the 101st Airborne Division, is accused of killing an Iraqi man, two women and a girl in Mahmoudiya, just south of Baghdad, in March.

Iraqis reported the killings to U.S. troops the day they occurred, but the deaths were blamed on insurgents or "other entities" at the time, according to an FBI agent's affidavit.

But three months later, during combat stress debriefing sessions that followed the killings of two U.S. soldiers kidnapped from a checkpoint in Yusufiya, members of Green's platoon began recounting the killings.

The rape victim was 15 years old.

The government also offered a $50,000 reward for Abu Ayyub al-Masri, who replaced al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi after his death in a June 7 U.S. airstrike northeast of Baghdad. The announcement came just two days after the U.S. administration approved a reward up to $5 million in exchange for al-Masri, whose real name is Abu Hamza al-Muhajer.

• Iraq had no WMD’s at all.

• There was no link between Iraq and Al Queda

• We were led (or misled) into the war for the wrong reasons.

• The Defense Department spied on Americans

• The administration planted at least one phony reporter in the White House pressroom to ask softball questions

• We hired people to make up stories for paid covert insertion of slanted news in Iraqi media outlets

• We condoned all sorts of illegal and improper torture of prisoners.

• The Valerie Plame “leak” came from the highest levels of the White House.

• The president approved of illegal searches of Americans by electronic means and then stretched the bounds of reasonableness by misleading America into believing that what he did was legal and in our countries best interest. In what appears to be a consistent position to take, the administration is validating its position be expressing the notion that we haven’t been attacked since we’ve been doing this and ergo, it must be OK!

• The president knows how to change the subject by attacking whomever “leaked” the surveillance information to the public.

• Whoever leaked this is a national hero, not a criminal.

We do not know what else we do not know has been going on in this top secret and duplicitous administration. They have a five-year history of lies, deceptions, and omissions. We also don’t know if the president has ever noticed or read the constitution, or if the Attorney General of the United States has looked at it lately.
