US: Shanghai group 'contradictory' on 'terror'

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States pointed out what it called contradictions between the goals and work of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, but stopped short of calling it anti-American.

Shanghai summit comprising China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and observers: India,
Iran Mongolia and Pakistan.

"Certainly, having Iran there as an observer -- Iran, the world's largest or most significant state sponsor of terrorism -- again runs counter to the idea that this is a group dedicated in part to countering terrorism in the region." --State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

SCO's importance also has grown with skyrocketing oil prices because it includes major oil producers as well as China, which has emerged as one of the fastest-growing energy consumers. Other big consumers like India are also attending the summit as observers. Regional analysts told the Herald Tribune the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is emerging as yet another player in a crowded web of diplomatic and military ties


"The SCO is an important and influential international and regional organization. Its member countries have an aggregate population exceeding more than half the world's population," he said.

US boosts military ties with Vietnam

Vietnam is one of several Asian states with which the Pentagon has built close ties to help its war on terrorism and to hedge against a rising China, which Washington says is too secretive about its military spending and its intentions.

The two sides agreed to start medical training under a Pentagon-funded program, and step up cooperation on de-mining and finding remains of soldiers from the Vietnam War, he said.

The military talks took place less than a week after the two countries signed a new trade pact that paves the way for Vietnam to join the World Trade Organization by year-end.

"It is shocking that the Iraqi prime minister is reportedly considering granting amnesty to insurgents who have killed U.S. troops," said Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.). "On the day we lost the 2,500th soldier in Iraq, the mere idea that this proposal may go forward is an insult to the brave men and women who have died in the name of Iraqi freedom. I call on President Bush to denounce this proposal immediately."

AMNESTY PLAN TO COVER ATTACKS ON US MILITARY

But according to the Post's reporting, the amnesty plan is likely to include pardons for those who had attacked only U.S. troops,

"I was impressed by … the sophisticated nature of … discussion [in Baghdad]" on the subject, the President said, "and their recognition that it's really important to do the best they can to reconcile the past."

Jawad al-Bulani was a member of Iraq's interim Governing Council in 2004. He became a member of the Iraqi parliament in 2005. During the rule of Saddam Hussein he was an air force engineer but left the armed forces in 1999.

LT GEN ABDUL QADIR OBEIDI (SUNNI) - DEFENCE MINISTER

Lt Gen Obeidi served in the Iraqi army under Saddam Hussein, but was demoted for opposing the 1990 invasion of Kuwait. He says that he was forced to retire in 1992 and detained two years later. He faced a military court which ordered the confiscation of his house and other assets. He insists that he has no links to any Iraqi political faction.

Recently seized documents that led to al-Zarqawi's death also revealed the hideouts and names of other al Qaeda in Iraq leaders and could destroy the terror network, Iraq's national security adviser said Thursday.

"Al Qaeda is on the run now in Iraq, and this is the beginning of the end of al Qaeda in Iraq," Mowaffak al-Rubaie told CNN.

The documents, he said, were found on a "thumb drive" memory card with 1 gigabyte of memory and represented "a trove of information ... a treasure of data." The discovery was among many made during an ongoing operation that began before the June 7 airstrike that killed al-Zarqawi.


American and Iraqi forces have killed 104 insurgents in 452 raids nationwide since al-Qaida in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed last week, the U.S. military said.

Caldwell said sweeps across Iraq since al-Zarqawi's death led to 28 significant arms caches. He said 255 of the raids were joint operations, while 143 were carried out by Iraqi forces alone.

The al-Qaida document said its insurgency was being hurt by an increase in U.S.-trained Iraqi forces, by widespread arrests and seizures of weapons, and by a crackdown on financial outlets.

Bolivian President Evo Morales opens a health clinic to be staffed by Cuban physicians on Wednesday at La Higuera, the place where Ernesto Che Guevara, the legendary doctor-guerrilla commander, was murdered in 1967.

Choosing Che’s 78th birth anniversary for the occasion, Morales will also deliver diplomas to 17 area residents who just completed a literacy program using the Cuban "Yes I Can" method.

Earlier in the day a Comprehensive Diagnostic Center donated by Cuba to Bolivia will be inaugurated at Valle Grande, where Che’s remains were discovered and exhumed before being sent to Cuba in 1997.


Dr. Jorge Gonzalez, rector of the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences of Havana, and Camilo Guevara, Che’s son, will be on hand for both ceremonies. Gonzalez headed the research team that recovered the remains of Che and his comrades.

For technical reasons both ceremonies can not be broadcast live by satellite, however the clinic opening at La Higuera will be broadcast on Cubavision, the Educational Channel, Cubavision International, Radio Rebelde and Radio Havana Cuba starting at 6:00 p.m.

The broadcast will be possible thanks to a joint effort of Cuba’s ICRT, TeleSUR and Bolivian Channel 7.

"HADJI GIRL" ---- FAMOUS SONG RECENTLY BANNED FROM YOU TUBE AND THE MILITARY ---- WORDS BELOW

The Council on American
-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on the Pentagon and Congress to investigate a music video posted on the Internet that seems to show U.S. Marines cheering a song that glorifies the killing of Iraqi civilians.

The video was up on YouTube in several places but it was taken down while I was writing this post. I should have downloaded it. It is still up on CAIR.

This is an interesting phenomonen for several reasons

• it is a genuine cultural artifact rather than an engineered photo op or piece from the corporate media

• it isnt necessrily a bloodthirsty peon but rather a crude reaction to a difficult situation. That's not to say--the corporate media is fond of saying 99.9. I would say it's more like 70%. The other 30% are temporarily/permanently sociopath. Bottom line, none of them ask to go.
  

• after three years there is no cultural connection between the soldiers and iraqis

• the soldiers don't understand the culture, don't speak arabic- even rudimentary- and have a "South Park" attitude.
  

• are universally hated. Even in Vietnam there was the South Vietnamese government on his/her side. In Iraq there are only enemies.

• like Vietnam, it is a guerilla war - everyone is your enemy and will strike at a moments notice from anywhere.

• In the US Military there is always a disconnect between the military bureaucracy and the grunt but now the military and civilian bureaucracy are "pc" scared which will bring untold pressures on the grunts in an already impossible situation. Like: "The first repercussion of this is going to be that troops aren't going to be able to access youtube from the computers at the MWR tent anymore, because that's what some people in the bureaucracy see as a viable first step". And: "We are led by chickenshit cowards, I wonder if they read the lyrics of the whole song, or just the part that CAIR quoted".

• This is an attempt to place the grunt's perspective and/or excuse on Haditha type situations
  

• He has to "hit the floor" in the Burger King and in the sod hut. He has to "hit the floor" everywhere he goes.
